History of Feng Shui in Curacao
Curacao is a very spiritual, Dutch Caribbean Island, located in the southern Caribbean, with approximately 150.000 inhabitants.
Even though not openly, the transcendental aspect of BTB Feng Shui, certainly not under that name, has always been practiced by the natives of the Island.
It was and still is very normal:
- whether by a priest or through folkloric means, to do blessing rituals and other offerings, before the construction of a house or opening of a business;
- to take ritual baths and clear the house, especially at year's end;
- to use beads and pendants to protect babies/children from evil eye or other bad influences;
- to do house clearing with different types of incense, a mixture of herbs and/or floral waters to rid the house or area of bad spirits and negative energy, etc.
It is still not a surprise to see a succulent aloe plant hung above the front-door to protect the inhabitants of the house.
Coconut & Candles
The Governor of the Netherlands Antilles resides in Curacao, is the highest authority in our country and represents the queen of the Dutch Kingdom. What better proof of open-mindedness of our people and spiritual greatness of Curacao, than to see described on the first page of a local newspaper how the Governor slammed a coconut to pieces on the floor of “Landhuis Bloemhof” and lit candles as part of an opening ceremony organized by the Indian colony residing on the Island?
Conform this newspaper this ritual is a “…symbol for good beginnings in the Indian culture.”
As per the BTB Feng Shui teachings all such ceremonies fall under the category; “transcendental aspects;”
- just as the blessing ceremony, performed by Professor Lin Yun at the start of the election campaign of Pres. George Bush, father, and
- just as the blessing ceremony, shown on the first page of a local newspaper and performed this year by our beloved Mrs. Dinah Veeris at the opening of the main office of the Dutch airline, Arkefly. In this particular case, Dinah used local agrarian products to perform the blessing.
The BTB Feng Shui approaches each situation from the visible perspective (position, form, color and structural design), as well as from the invisible/transcendental perspective.
How it began
Around 1994 some of the first international Feng Shui Teachers have been invited to the Island of Curacao by some enthusiasts. They came for about a weekend or a week and left the Island, mostly back to the United States. In this period much more emphasis was put on the visible aspect than on the transcendental aspect of Feng Shui.
How it Developed
In 1997 a native of the Island, Mr. Nelson Scoop, began structural Feng Shui activities on the Island, as a full-time teacher and consultant.
He has been studying and practicing in Maui, Hawaii with world renowned teachers Sean Xenja & James Moser and since 1997 with Professor Lin Yun.
Almost three thousand students have been through his classes ever since, and mostly by word of mouth. Some of those students continued their studies with Mr. Scoop and have, in the meanwhile, done their Feng Shui Consultants courses.
Most of them adhere themselves to the continuous education policy and continue to visit most of Mr. Scoop’s classes.
Currently there may be three to four known active consultants not from the school of Mr. Scoop, practicing a mixture of traditional Feng Shui and BTB or intuitive Feng Shui.
The dynamic approach of Mr. Scoop, slowly but surely has made the local public more and more aware of the importance of Feng Shui in their lives.
International Feng Shui Shui Guild
In the year 2005 Mr. Scoop has become the Country Liaison for Curacao to the International Feng Shui Guild. In the meanwhile

In November 2006, while attending a workshop of Professor Lin Yun at the Harvard Divinity School in Cambridge (MA), a group of almost 40 BTB Feng Shui Students from Curacao who were attending this workshop, heard from Professor Lin Yun, that he accepted the invitation to pay an official visit to the Island. A committee was later formed by Mr. Scoop, in order to organize the first Curacao World Feng Shui Conference.
Mr. Scoop strongly believes that Curacao is a very spiritual Island and that it has all the potential to become the center for personal mental -, and spiritual development of this hemisphere if not the world.”
